How do I configure my email address in my email software?

Each email software has it’s own method to configure an email account. Please visit this page to see a list of possible configurations, and select your software to get a detailed walkthrough. Is there a limit to the amount of email I can have in my account?

There is no limit to the number of emails on the server, however you have a 10 MB limit on it at one time. If you’re using an email software on your computer to download your email on your computer, this shouldn’t be a problem. However, if you check your email from the VIF Email interface, it is your responsibility to make sure your mailbox doesn’t fill up.

Please be aware that Outlook Express has a limit of 5 MB for the size of outgoing emails, so you will not be able to send anything bigger than this limit. Other email readers might or might not have this limit. Please consult your software’s documentation or website.

Can I access my email from anywhere or only from home?

Yes, you can check your email from anywhere around the world using our VIF Email interface. However, if you have configured your email reader to download all your emails automatically, you will only have access to the new messages, the old one being located on your home computer.

Can I share my emails between computers using Outlook or other email software?

Yes, you can share an email account between multiple computers easily. All you need to do is to configure the email account as an IMAP account, and you’re all set! If you have already set up the email account in your email software, you might have to delete the account and re-do it. This depends on the software, but most will not let you change the server type after the configuration is done.

To configure your account in IMAP, simply create a new account and choose “IMAP” as your server type. For example, in the Outlook Express “Add / Mail” wizard, the 3rd screen asks for the mail servers. The first line sais, by default, “My incoming mail server is a POP3 server”. Just change that to “My incoming mail server is a IMAP server”, and then continue on as usual. When you are finished, Outlook express will ask if you want to download a list of folders. Just click “yes” and you will be able to see all your VIF mail under the “mail.vif.com” folder in the left part of the screen.

I get an error when I send and/or receive email. Where can I get help?

First of all, make sure you are connected to the internet before you try to send and receive email. Also, if your email software is asking you for your username and password more than once, it might be wrong, so please double-check it. If you are still having problems, here is a list of errors that you can find in Outlook Express. Some will give away the best solution, but others are quite cryptic… We recommend you call one of our friendly technicians to help you with any email error you’re getting.
